As Gun Violence Awareness Month draws to a close, we find ourselves confronting a familiar tension.

The orange has been worn. The names have been spoken. The vigils have been held.

Within days, the calendar will turn, the headlines will shift, and much of the nation will move on to its next pressing concern.

But families do not move on.

Communities do not move on.

The empty chairs at dinner tables are not filled simply because June has ended.

Beyond Awareness

We believe every family deserves to feel safe in their homes, schools, neighborhoods, and places of worship. We believe communities deserve more than temporary attention after tragedy. They deserve sustained investment, honest conversation, and a willingness to confront difficult problems together.

This conversation is not about choosing sides. It is about choosing one another.

Gun violence reaches beyond statistics and headlines into homes, classrooms, congregations, and neighborhoods. Ignoring it does not make it disappear. Facing it together gives us the opportunity to build something better.

The Toll on Our Communities

Gun violence does not end with the individual who is harmed. Its impact ripples outward, often for generations.

It surfaces in the child who flinches at the sound of a backfiring engine. In the mother who can no longer sleep through the night. In the educator who must explain why a student's seat remains empty. In the congregation gathered for yet another funeral. In the neighborhood where porch lights stay on a little longer because people no longer feel safe.

Its effects extend beyond grief.

Businesses close. Families relocate. Investment retreats from neighborhoods too often labeled instead of supported. Trauma becomes embedded in communities that rarely receive the resources needed to heal.

Entire communities carry this weight, and too often, those carrying the greatest burden are asked to shoulder it with the fewest resources.

The Work Continues

For Derrick, this work has never been theoretical. As a pastor and community leader in Middle Tennessee, he has spent years walking alongside families affected by violence. Through his service on the boards of Nashville Peacemakers and Moms Over Murder, he has witnessed both the devastating consequences of violence and the extraordinary resilience of communities determined to heal.

Alongside that work, Derrick has long held a deep appreciation for the arts and their unique ability to reach hearts where words alone sometimes cannot. He has always believed that storytelling, faith, and community are not separate pursuits, but complementary ways of fostering understanding, healing, and hope.

Long before audiences knew our brother Chadwick through film, he was exploring these same questions through his writing.

His play Deep Azure is a haunting and lyrical meditation on grief, love, and the lasting impact of gun violence. Written in verse, it invites audiences to confront loss not through headlines or statistics, but through the deeply human experiences of those left behind.

This year, Deep Azure was presented at Shakespeare's Globe in London. For Kevin, whose career has spanned professional theatre, dance, directing, choreography, arts education, and cultural leadership, serving as an artistic advisor on the production was deeply personal. Drawing on decades of experience bringing stories to life on stage, he helped preserve Chadwick's artistic vision while ensuring the emotional and cultural integrity of the work remained at the forefront.

For both of us, seeing Deep Azure reach new audiences affirmed something we have long believed. Whether through ministry, community engagement, or the performing arts, stories have the power to cultivate empathy, strengthen communities, and inspire meaningful change.

Bringing Deep Azure to audiences is more than celebrating Chadwick's artistry.

It is an act of advocacy.

Theater creates space for empathy. It slows us down long enough to truly see one another. It invites reflection, challenges assumptions, and reminds us that behind every statistic is a family, a friend, and a future forever changed.

Chadwick believed stories could change hearts before they changed minds. He believed truth telling, compassion, and showing up for community were never separate from justice itself.

That conviction continues to shape the work we carry forward, each in our own way, united by the belief that service, storytelling, and community all have the power to move people toward hope.

Looking Forward

We are not here to divide.

We are here to build.

We believe the strongest communities are built when people who may disagree still choose to remain in conversation. Progress rarely begins with shouting. It begins with listening, understanding, and refusing to surrender our shared humanity.

We stand alongside families who have experienced unimaginable loss, responsible gun owners who believe safety and responsibility can coexist, faith leaders caring for their communities, educators investing in young people, organizers doing the work every day, and artists who use their gifts to illuminate truth.

We believe there is a path forward that honors both constitutional rights and our shared responsibility to protect one another.

That path will not be paved by awareness alone.

It will be built through compassion, courage, accountability, and sustained commitment.

Awareness months matter. They shine an important light on issues that deserve our attention.

But awareness alone has never transformed a community.

The work begins after the hashtags fade.

After the cameras leave.

After the calendar turns.

That is where we intend to remain.

The month is ending.

The work is just beginning.
